LOCATIONS

Operating in Adelaide

Dr David Kitchen performs surgical procedures at Burnside Hospital Stepney, Ashford Hospital, Western Hospital and Port Pirie Hospital. Through these Adelaide facilities, patients access clinical technology and surgical support throughout their orthopaedic treatment.

About Dr David Kitchen

Dr David Kitchen is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon with particular expertise in hip and knee surgery. His training spans some of the most respected institutions in Australia and the United Kingdom, including the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore; the UK's leading orthopaedic centre, where he undertook subspecialty fellowship training before returning to practice in South Australia.

He holds clinical and teaching roles at Adelaide University and across the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network, and consults privately through sportsmed's Stepney and Henley Beach locations.

Dr Kitchen takes an individual approach to each patient's care. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all model, he works to understand what matters most to the person in front of him, whether that's getting back to recreational sport, reducing daily pain, or simply moving more freely around the house.

Conditions Seen at Stepney

Dr Kitchen's Stepney consultations cover a broad range of hip and knee conditions, including:

Hip conditions: osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, hip dysplasia, labral pathology, and painful or worn joint replacements requiring revision.

Knee conditions: osteoarthritis (affecting one or multiple compartments), ligament injuries including ACL tears, meniscal injuries, cartilage damage, and failed prior knee replacements.

Both acute injuries and long-standing degenerative conditions are managed, and consultations are available for patients wanting a second opinion on a diagnosis or proposed treatment plan.

Treatments and Procedures

Where surgery is appropriate and agreed upon by the patient, Dr Kitchen performs procedures at Burnside War Memorial Hospital in Toorak Gardens and Ashford Hospital in Ashford; both private facilities conveniently located for patients who consult at Stepney.

Surgical options include:

  • Total and partial hip replacement, including via the anterior (muscle-sparing) approach
  • Robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement using Mako technology
  • Total and unicompartmental knee replacement
  • Patient-specific knee replacement using custom-manufactured implants
  • Revision hip and knee replacement for complex or failed prior surgery
  • ACL reconstruction and return-to-sport rehabilitation planning
  • Meniscal repair and reconstruction
  • Cartilage injury treatment and joint preservation surgery

Not every patient will need surgery. Many consultations result in a non-operative management plan, and Dr Kitchen will discuss all relevant options before any decisions are made. Any surgical procedure involves risks that will be discussed in detail during your consultation.
