The cost of private surgery can be a concern for people considering treatment for a knee injury, hip arthritis or knee arthritis. For eligible Medibank Private members, Dr David Kitchen provides selected no gap orthopaedic surgery procedures at Western Hospital in Henley Beach.
This arrangement applies only to eligible patients receiving an included procedure through Medibank Private at Western Hospital. Clinical suitability, health fund eligibility and the services covered under the program must be confirmed before surgery proceeds.
Eligible procedures may include:

- Patella stabilisation surgery
- Hip replacement
- Knee replacement
What Does No Gap Surgery Mean?
No gap surgery means an eligible Medibank Private member may have no out-of-pocket costs for included treatment and services associated with their hospital admission under the no gap arrangement.
No gap access is not available to every patient or for every type of orthopaedic surgery. Your eligibility is based on your Medibank Private hospital cover, waiting periods, the recommended procedure, hospital requirements, and confirmation that your care can be provided through the program.
Before making decisions about surgery, patients should speak with Medibank Private and Dr Kitchen’s practice to confirm:
- That their hospital cover includes the proposed procedure
- That any required waiting periods have been served
- That Western Hospital is included for their treatment
- Which services are included under the no gap arrangement
- Any costs that may sit outside the program

No Gap Surgery Available at Western Hospital
Dr Kitchen’s no gap agreement with Medibank Private is available for eligible procedures performed at:

Western Hospital is a private surgical hospital in Adelaide’s western suburbs. Dr Kitchen also consults in Henley Beach, giving local patients access to consultation and surgical care in Adelaide’s west.
This no gap arrangement does not apply to procedures performed at Dr Kitchen’s other surgical locations unless separately confirmed.
No Gap ACL Reconstruction
The anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, helps support stability in the knee. An ACL injury may occur during sport, exercise or an unexpected twisting movement.
Surgery is not required for every ACL injury. Treatment recommendations are based on factors including knee stability, symptoms, activity requirements, associated injuries and personal treatment priorities.
For patients who are clinically suitable for ACL reconstruction, eligible Medibank Private members may access no gap ACL reconstruction with Dr Kitchen at Western Hospital.
No Gap Hip Replacement
Hip replacement may be considered for people living with hip joint damage that causes pain, stiffness or reduced movement and has not responded adequately to non-surgical management.
Dr Kitchen provides hip replacement surgery for patients in Adelaide. For clinically suitable patients requiring hip replacement, eligible Medibank Private members may access the procedure through the no gap arrangement at Western Hospital.

No Gap Patella Stabilisation Surgery
The patella, commonly called the kneecap, may become unstable or dislocate. Recurrent kneecap instability can affect confidence in movement, participation in sport and everyday activities.
Patella stabilisation surgery may be considered after assessment of the knee, previous dislocations, symptoms, imaging findings and response to non-surgical treatment.
Eligible Medibank Private members who are recommended patella stabilisation surgery may be able to receive this procedure through Dr Kitchen’s no gap arrangement at Western Hospital.
No Gap Knee Replacement
Knee replacement may be discussed for people with knee joint damage that causes ongoing pain, stiffness or difficulty with daily activities.
Treatment decisions are based on the extent of knee damage, symptoms, general health, personal priorities and other care already tried. Knee replacement is not the first treatment recommended for every patient with knee pain.
Eligible Medibank Private members who are clinically suitable for knee replacement may access no gap knee replacement surgery with Dr Kitchen at Western Hospital.
Am I Eligible for No Gap Surgery?
You may be considered for this arrangement if you:
- Are insured with Medibank Private
- Have hospital cover that includes the proposed surgery
- Have completed any applicable waiting periods
- Are clinically suitable for ACL reconstruction, patella stabilisation, hip replacement or knee replacement
- Are able to have surgery at Western Hospital
- Receive approval through the required no gap process
