Preparing for Surgery
Preparation is a vital part of your surgical journey. Taking the time to organise your health and your home in the weeks leading up to your procedure helps support a smoother recovery and allows you to focus entirely on your rehabilitation.
In The Weeks Before Your Surgery
Once your surgical date is confirmed after review at our sportsmed Stepney or Henley Beach clinic, several steps are taken to prepare your body for the procedure:
Pre-Admission Clinic
The hospital may contact you for a pre-admission assessment. This is a routine check of your general health, including blood tests or an ECG, to coordinate your care with the anaesthetic team.
Medication Review
Some medications, such as blood thinners or certain herbal supplements, may need to be paused. Dr David Kitchen will provide specific instructions on which medications to continue and which to stop.
Health Optimisation
If you smoke, stopping or reducing intake well before surgery supports better wound healing. Similarly, managing existing conditions like diabetes is important for your recovery.
Physical Preparation
Staying as active as your symptoms allow helps maintain muscle strength, which is beneficial for your post-operative mobility.
Preparing Your Home
Preparing your living space before you go into hospital can help to make the transition back home easier:
- Clear Pathways: Remove loose rugs or electrical cords that could be trip hazards while you are using walking aids.
- Stock the Pantry: Prepare or freeze meals in advance and ensure frequently used items are kept at waist height to avoid unnecessary bending or reaching.
- Support at Home: Arrange for a family member or friend to assist with transport, grocery shopping, and household chores for the first week or two after you return home.
The Day Before Your Surgery
Fasting
You will receive specific instructions regarding when to stop eating and drinking (including water). Following these guidelines is essential for your safety during anaesthesia.
Hygiene
You may be asked to wash with a specific antiseptic soap provided by the hospital to help keep the surgical site clean.
Confirmation
The hospital will contact you to confirm your arrival time. Please note that your arrival time is earlier than the actual start of your surgery to allow for clinical admissions.
What To Pack In Your Hospital Bag
Keep your hospital bag light and practical:
- Comfortable Clothing: Loose-fitting clothes and sturdy, flat, non-slip shoes.
- Toiletries: Personal items and any glasses or hearing aids you use daily.
- Documentation: Your physical X-rays or imaging (if you have them), your Medicare card, and private health details.
- Medications: Bring all your current medications in their original packaging.
