KNEE SURGERY
Partial Knee Replacement
Partial knee replacement, or unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to address damage (usually osteoarthritis) that’s confined to a single area of the knee joint. By resurfacing the affected area only and preserving healthy bone and ligaments, this procedure provides a clinical alternative for localised joint wear. Dr David Kitchen provides specialised assessment for partial knee replacement at sportsmed Stepney and Henley Beach, Adelaide.
What is a Partial Knee Replacement?
A partial knee replacement resurfaces one of the three compartments of the knee: inner (medial), outer (lateral) or kneecap (patellofemoral). Rather than a total knee replacement, this procedure targets the specific area of damage while leaving the rest of the joint intact, supporting a faster recovery, reduced pain and more ease of movement.
This procedure is most commonly recommended for localised osteoarthritis, though it may also be used for post-traumatic wear or localised bone conditions like avascular necrosis.
Common Symptoms of Localised Arthritis
Partial knee replacement is specifically designed for patients whose symptoms are limited to one side of the joint.
These symptoms often include:
Pinpointed pain and discomfort that is felt specifically on the inside, outside or front of the knee.
Activity-related swelling such as inflammation that occurs after walking or exercise but is localised to one area.
Mechanical catching like a sensation of clicking or snagging specifically within the affected
Otherwise stable, where the knee feels structurally sound in other areas, but painful in the specific site of wear.
Potential Benefits of Partial Knee Replacement Â
A detailed clinical assessment with Dr David Kitchen at sportsmed Stepney or Henley Beach, supported by imaging, is necessary before determining if this is the right procedure for you.
Bone Preservation
Limits the removal of healthy bone, keeping more of the natural anatomy intact.
Better Movement
Preserves healthy ligaments to support a more "normal" sensation during movement.
Less Recovery Time
Smaller incision, reduced bleeding and lower complications helps in the return to daily tasks.
Pain Management
This surgery addresses the specific bone-on-bone friction that causes the localised pain.
About the Surgery
Dr David Kitchen uses robotic-assisted technology (MAKO) to perform partial knee replacements. This allows detailed pre-operative mapping and tailored planning for a high level of precision.
Personalised Mapping
Before surgery, detailed imaging is used to create a 3D map of your knee.
Intra-operative Accuracy
The robotic system provides real-time data, allowing for the precise alignment and balancing of the implant.
Preservation of Tissue
The accuracy of the robotic arm helps guide so that only the damaged bone is removed to protect and preserve the surrounding healthy ligaments and cartilage.
Ligament Retention
Because the ACL and PCL are preserved, the joint maintains more of its natural stability and feel during activity.
Minimally Invasive Focus
A smaller incision compared to total knee replacement minimises the impact on muscles and tendons to support recovery.
