DR David Kitchen

Locations

Port Pirie, Adelaide

Dr David Kitchen also consults privately at sportsmed Stepney and Henley Beach.

For patients in Port Pirie and the broader Spencer Gulf region, access to specialist orthopaedic care has historically meant a lengthy drive to Adelaide. Dr David Kitchen's consulting visits to Port Pirie Regional Health Service aim to change that, bringing fellowship-trained hip and knee expertise directly to the mid-north of South Australia.

Whether you're managing persistent joint pain, recovering from a sports injury, or exploring your options for hip or knee surgery, a local consultation means you can get specialist input without the time, cost, and difficulty of travelling to the city, particularly when mobility is already a concern.

Dr Kitchen sees patients from Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Whyalla, Crystal Brook, Jamestown, and surrounding regional communities.

About Dr David Kitchen

Dr David Kitchen is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon with a focus on hip and knee surgery, joint replacement, and lower limb sports injuries. He began his medical training at Cambridge University and completed his surgical training across South Australia and the Northern Territory, giving him a strong appreciation for the realities of delivering care outside of metropolitan centres.

His subspecialty fellowship was undertaken at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, the UK's leading orthopaedic institution, before he returned to South Australia to establish his private practice. He holds teaching and clinical leadership roles at Adelaide University and the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network, and consults privately through sportsmed's Stepney and Henley Beach locations in addition to his regional visiting commitments.

Dr Kitchen's approach to patient care is grounded in listening first. He takes the time to understand what each person is dealing with day to day, and what they're hoping to get back to, before discussing what treatment, if any, makes sense for them.

Conditions Seen at Port Pirie

Consultations in Port Pirie cover the same scope of hip and knee conditions managed across Dr Kitchen's Adelaide locations.

Hip conditions: osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, hip dysplasia, labral pathology, and review of hip replacements that are causing ongoing pain or have deteriorated over time.

Knee conditions: osteoarthritis: whether affecting a single compartment or the whole knee, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, meniscal injuries, cartilage damage, and assessment of prior knee surgery that has not achieved the expected result.

For patients who have been waiting on a diagnosis, living with unresolved joint pain, or who simply want a clearer picture of their options, a consultation is a useful starting point regardless of whether surgery ultimately forms part of the plan.

Treatments and Surgical Options

Where surgery is appropriate and the patient wishes to proceed, procedures are performed at Port Pirie Hospital for eligible cases, as well as at Dr Kitchen's Adelaide surgical facilities: Burnside War Memorial Hospital and Ashford Hospital and Western Hospital for cases requiring the full range of specialist resources and implant technology.

Treatment options discussed during consultation may include:

  • Total and partial hip replacement, including via the anterior muscle-sparing approach
  • Robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement using Mako technology
  • Total knee replacement and unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement
  • Patient-specific knee replacement using custom-designed implants
  • Revision hip and knee replacement for complex presentations or prior failed surgery
  • ACL reconstruction and return-to-activity planning
  • Meniscal repair and reconstruction
  • Cartilage injury treatment and joint preservation surgery

Not every consultation results in a recommendation for surgery. Dr Kitchen discusses all options, including non-operative management and any surgical procedure involves risks that are covered thoroughly during the consultation process.
