About Dr David Kitchen
Dr David Kitchen is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery, joint replacement, and lower limb sports injuries. He trained initially at Cambridge University before completing his medical and surgical training in South Australia and the Northern Territory, and undertook subspecialty fellowship training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore; widely regarded as the UK's foremost orthopaedic institution.
Back in Adelaide, Dr Kitchen holds teaching and clinical leadership roles at Adelaide University and across the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network. In private practice, he consults at sportsmed's Henley Beach and Stepney locations, bringing the same considered, patient-centred approach to both.
His focus is on understanding what each person is hoping to achieve, whether that means returning to an active lifestyle, managing a degenerative condition, or recovering from a complex injury, and building a care plan around that.
Conditions Seen at Henley Beach
Dr Kitchen's Henley Beach consultations cover a wide range of hip and knee presentations, from sports injuries in younger active patients through to degenerative joint disease in older adults.
Hip conditions:Â osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, avascular necrosis, labral pathology, and assessment of painful or worn hip replacements that may require revision.
Knee conditions:Â osteoarthritis affecting one or more compartments of the knee, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, meniscal injuries, cartilage damage, and revision of prior knee surgery where outcomes have been unsatisfactory.
Patients seeking a second opinion on a diagnosis or recommended treatment are also welcome to book a consultation.
Treatments and Procedures
Where surgery is clinically appropriate and the patient has decided to proceed, Dr Kitchen operates at Western Hospital in Henley Beach; making it a particularly convenient option for patients consulting at this location, as well as Ashford Hospital and Burnside War Memorial Hospital.
Procedures include:
- Total and partial hip replacement, including via the anterior muscle-sparing approach
- Robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement using Mako technology
- Total knee replacement and unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement
- Patient-specific knee replacement using custom-designed implants
- Revision hip and knee replacement for complex or previously failed joint surgery
- ACL reconstruction with a focus on full return to activity
- Meniscal repair and reconstruction
- Cartilage injury treatment and joint preservation procedures
Surgery is not the outcome of every consultation. Dr Kitchen discusses all relevant treatment options, including non-operative approaches, before any plan is agreed upon. All procedures carry risks, which are discussed in detail during your consultation.
